LEBANON — There’s much to say about playing your best at the right time of year. The Lady Pioneers won their fifth match in a row and took a big step in securing second place in the Southwest District volleyball standings on Thursday at Charles C. Long Gymnasium. Lebanon disposed of Virginia High 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13) to win the regular season series.

“It’s very exciting, especially since it’s my senior year,” said Lebanon libero Rileigh Buchanan. “This team has come a long way and works well together. We wanted this win against Virginia High, so it feels good to get it.”

With one week remaining in the regular season, Marion needs one win to claim the regular season title and the top seed in the Region 2D tournament. Lebanon (10-10, 6-2 SWD) is a victory away from second place with two matches remaining.

The defense against the Bearcats was strong, and it needed to be. Hitters Amelia McKenzie and Ellie Cobb provide a lot of punch for Virginia High. The Pioneers were up to the task. Buchanan (13 digs), Lauren Horne (10 digs), and Bailey Collins (eight digs) were making plays all night on the back row.

“Defense can be difficult depending on who we’re playing,” Buchanan said. “Our blockers up front help us a lot, and everyone on the back row plays a big role. Everyone cheers each other on and are very supportive. I can’t play defense without the rest of my team.”

Helping the effort at the net was middle hitter Gracie Crabtree, who stuffed the Bearcats with seven blocks.

“I’m proud of Gracie,” stated Buchanan. “Her blocks make it much easier on the back row, especially against a team like Virginia High with hard hitters. I love playing good opponents, it pushes me and makes us all have to play better.”

The first set was a challenge, tied eight times, with five lead changes. The Pioneers took the lead for good at 14-13. Lebanon won the second set with ease.
