Alayna McNulty played a starring role when Honaker High School won the 2022 VHSL Class 1 girls basketball state championship and she did so as a ninth grader.
“I know how hard it can be coming in as a freshman knowing that you have an important role to fill,” McNulty said. “The speed of varsity is a lot faster.”
McNulty is now a senior and the Tigers are two wins away from winning it all again and one of her fellow starters these days is a fantastic freshman by the name of Julianna “Juju” Farmer.
“Juju has come a long way since the beginning of the year,” McNulty said. “Being a freshman and knowing you have a key role can be hard at first. However, Juju hasn’t avoided the challenge, and we wouldn’t be where we are today if we did not have her on our team.”
Farmer has made an instant impact in averaging 10 points, five rebounds and four steals per game for the Hogoheegee District and Region 1D champions.
Honaker (28-1) has reeled off 27 straight wins entering today’s 6 p.m. VHSL Class 1 state semifinal clash with the George Wythe Maroons (25-3) at Pulaski County High School.
