CASTLEWOOD — Honaker High School standout Hunter Dye made some history during the Virginia High School League Region 1D wrestling championship on Feb. 13 at Castlewood High School. Dye defeated Rural Retreat’s Gradyn Gibson by a major decision (11-2) in the 113-pound finals to become the first wrestler in Honaker High School history to win a regional wrestling title.
“Hunter had a great day of wrestling,” said Honaker coach Dylan Shortridge. “He came into the tournament focused and knew what he had to do. Hunter got the first-period tech fall in his first match in the semifinals against Holston. In the finals, he got the early take down on Gibson and a near fall point to end the period and rode him out the entire second period. Hunter wrestled a smart third to secure the major."
