Williamsburg, KY – The sixth-ranked Patriots women's basketball team outscored the Phoenix 20-4 in the second quarter en route to an 85-63 win Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, UC improves to 23-3 overall and 9-1 in MSC Play.
Senior Kaylie Monday noted a game-high 23 points to go along with five stelas and six rebounds, while senior Kassie Monday added 14 points and seven assists. LeeAnna McNulty notched 14 points and six offensive rebounds, while Anaia Hoard chipped in 10 points.
Cumberland opened the game on an 8-0 run, before Kaylie Monday found Jaiden Cox on the wing for a three-pointer. Kassie Monday converted a three-point play to make it an 8-6 game, two minutes in. The Phoenix extended their lead to five points twice, before Joy Kendrick hit a layup to make it 18-15 with 1:47 remaining. Kassie Monday sank a pair of free throws before finding Kaylie Monday for a three-pointer giving the Patriots a 20-18 lead after the first quarter.
The Phoenix tied the score at 20-20 before Cumberlands went on a 13-0 run, that spanned four minutes, to take a 33-20 lead. The run opened with a Kaylie Monday three and was closed out with a three from Kassie Monday. An offensive putback from McNulty kicked off a 7-0 Patriots run as Cumberlands took a 40-22 lead into half.
Just over two minutes into the third quarter McNulty added a putback, while Hoard drained a three-pointer to push UC's lead to 45-24. Kaylie Monday used a fastbreak layup to open a 12-0 Patriots run, that included fastbreak layups from Kassie Monday and McNulty to extend UC's lead to 59-26. The Phoenix went on an 8-3 run before Kaylie Monday drained her fifth three-pointer as the Patriots took a 65-37 lead into the fourth quarter.
Cumberland opened the fourth quarter with seven unanswered points before McNulty completed a three-point play to make it 68-44. The two teams traded baskets as Emily Naranjo converted a layup before senior Brittni Allison sank a three-pointer for the Pats to make it 73-49 midway through the quarter. On UC's next possession, Darcie Anderson drained a three-pointer for her first collegiate basket. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes for the 85-63 final.
The Patriots outrebounded the Phoenix 42-34 in the game and hit 52.4% from behind the arc.
UC returns to the court Thursday, February 20th, when they travel to Henderson, TN to face #7 Freed-Hardeman. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
