BRISTOL, Tenn. – Hunter Dye had a second place showing in the 106-pound weight class at the 2024 VHSL Class 1 state wrestling tournament in what was the highest finish ever by a Honaker High School grappler.
He earned another runner-up medal on Saturday at the Bill Brimer Brawl in the Hall and this silver was sterling.
“I think this is tournament is honestly harder than state,” Dye said. “So, to compete with kids here is a good sign for upcoming tournaments.”
Dye won three of his four matches in the event and was the only male wrestler from far Southwest Virginia to reach the finals of the prestigious two-day tournament at Viking Hall.
The sophomore standout earned a 17-1 technical fall triumph over Grayson Luzinak from Chesnee High School of South Carolina, pinned Colton Jenkins of the Samuel Everett School of Innovation in Maryville, Tennessee and stuck the shoulders of Tennessee High’s Nic Carroll to the mat in the semifinals.
He then had to tangle with one of the tournament’s top talents in the 106-pound title bout and was pinned by Dobyns-Bennett’s Noah Watkins in 2:26.
