Avery and Peyton Musick

DAMASCUS, Va. – The Musick was sweet for Honaker on Friday night.

One week after Honaker was beaten soundly by Rye Cove, head coach Shane Wicks said the Tigers had to get the ball to Avery Musick on offense.

Good idea.

“Absolutely,” Wicks said. “He is electric with the ball in his hands. We have adapted a few things to make sure he is going to get the ball in his hands. He is special.”

Musick caught seven passes from his brother, Peyton Musick, for 127 yards and a touchdown, and the talented junior also ran for another score in helping the Tigers rebound from that loss by defeating Holston, 42-21, in the Hogoheegee District opener for both teams on Friday night.

“It was the plan. We had to switch up our offense a lot and we just went through two or three different lineups where I was lined up on the ball,” Avery. “We finally figured out the one that worked for us and we stuck with that and we got this win.”

Senior quarterback Peyton Musick did his part as well, recovering from being victimized by three interceptions against Rye Cove to being turnover free in this one, throwing for 219 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for two more scores.

“We made some mistakes. 3 (Avery) and 1 (Peyton) are good football players and they will make you pay and they were tough,” said Holston head coach Chris Akers, whose Cavaliers overcame an early 12-0 deficit to pull within 20-14 at the break. “We just didn’t have an answer for them tonight. We had some chances, but we got fortunate on that inadvertent whistle before halftime. Hats off to them, they outplayed us tonight.”

Honaker (2-2, 1-0), whose lone losses have been to unbeatens Lebanon and Rye Cove, scored first in the opening period when Peyton Musick ran for a 24-yard touchdown on a 4th-and-10. Musick would add a 1-yard run and connected with Jaxon Dye from 27 yards for a third score before the break. More scores followed, with Avery doing his part, catching passes in the game from 38, 31, 21, 16 and 10 yards.

“Him and his brother, they are good, Akers said. “They are a good tandem.”
