Honaker 49, Castlewood 7
Peyton Musick threw three touchdown passes and also returned a punt for a score as the Honaker Tigers trounced Castlewood and provided Shane Wicks with his first head-coaching victory.
Honaker (1-1) had suffered a loss to rival Lebanon eight days before but dominated from the start on Friday against another foe from Russell County. The Tigers led 22-0 after one quarter and 42-0 at halftime.
“We challenged our kids this week and they responded,” Wicks said. “They corrected a lot of mistakes and took a step forward.”
Jaxon Dye caught two TD passes from Musick and also rushed for two scores. Avery Musick also had a TD grab as Peyton Musick passed for 361 yards.
Brayden Marsh had a touchdown run and also led a defensive effort that limited Castlewood (0-2) to 142 total yards.
Castlewood got its lone touchdown from Kaleb “Scooter” Taylor with 5:54 remaining.
Honaker hosts Rye Cove (2-0) on Sept. 13 in a highly anticipated contest. Honaker beat the Cove twice last season, including in the Region 1D title game.
“Rye Cove returns a lot of the team we faced last year and those were two great games,” Wicks said. “I think we can expect another one. Rye Cove is well-coached. [Quarterback Landon Lane] is hard-nosed and their offense runs through him. We know we will have to play sound defensively to limit big plays. Offensively, we just have to protect the football and take advantage of what they give us.”
