HONAKER, Va. – Praise is always sung in the preseason when optimism reigns and a chorus of Honaker High School Tigers carried a familiar tune last week during the team’s media day when it came to extolling the skills of junior pass-catcher Avery Musick.
“He’s athletic as can be,” said junior offensive lineman Maddox Sykes. “Just a natural athlete – one of the best in the state.”
Added first-year Honaker head coach Shane Wicks, “I don’t know if there is a better receiver in the area. He’s got everything you want if you want to build a receiver – size, speed, hands.”
Running back Brayden Marsh chimed in: “The thing that impresses me most about him is his toughness and grit. He is one of those guys that just brings the team together. He is a leader.”
After being plagued by injuries that cost him most of the 2023 season, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Musick hopes to make plays all year long this time around for the defending VHSL Region 1D champions.
Even in limited duty last season, Musick made an impact to the tune of 23 catches for 485 yards and nine touchdowns. He also erased many potential big gains by the opposition as a lockdown defensive back.
