Shane Wicks graduated from Richlands High School in 2008, making his mark on the football field as a hard-hitting defensive end and linebacker who was a regional defensive player of the year and a member of a state championship squad during his time as a tackling terror for the Blue Tornado. However, Richlands isn’t the only place in Southwest Virginia that holds significance in terms of his involvement in the sport.
“I have roots in Honaker,” Wicks said, “My kids go to school here, I grew up here and my first years of football were played in Honaker until my family moved to Richlands. I grew up watching Honaker on Friday nights. I can remember vividly watching them play in the state title game on a frigid December day in 2000. I broke my first bone on [Fuller Field] returning a kick my sophomore year of high school and if I’m not mistaken, I think I even caught the first offensive touchdown on this field when they got the turf [in 2007].”
