After Honaker High School’s Kadence Keen had scored a goal early in the second half of Tuesday’s VHSL Class 1 girls soccer state quarterfinal match, she was swarmed by her joyful teammates.
Goalkeeper McKenzie Lowe was among those in the scrum.
“She had literally run the whole way across the field to the opposite goal just to celebrate with the team,” Keen said.
It was about the only time all day that Lowe was out of position as she turned in yet another strong performance in the Tigers’ 2-1 triumph over the George Wythe Maroons.
The victory put Honaker (10-6) in the state semifinals for the first time in program history and a showdown with the Northumberland Indians (15-2) awaits today at 1 p.m. at Roanoke College’s Kerr Stadium.
