Honaker High School’s boys soccer team added more hardware to the trophy case on Wednesday as the Tigers posted a 6-0 win over Patrick Henry in the Region 1D championship match.
Jaxon Dye and Jaylon Hart scored two goals apiece for Honaker (15-2-1), which will host Auburn on Tuesday in the Class 1 state quarterfinals.
Eric Ball and Landon Viers also scored, while goalkeeper Austin Clayburne recorded the shutout.
“We started slow in the first half,” said veteran Honaker coach Wilburn Johnson. “Eric Ball found the back of the net to give us a 1-0 lead with about 15 minutes left in the half. Hats off to Patrick Henry, they disrupted a lot of what we wanted to do. They won the 50/50 balls and beat us to a lot of our passes. We picked our offensive attack up after the first goal finding the back of the net twice more before halftime.”
Honaker held a 16-2 edge in shots.
The back line of Garrett Shortt, Landon Viers, Malachi Lowe and Jacob Powers played well.
“Pleased with my team’s effort and pleased that we were able to win the region,” Johnson said.
