EMORY, Va. – Honaker’s return season in the Hogoheegee District has featured several close losses in softball.

The breakthrough came in Monday’s district tournament title game.

With a 13-hit attack, the fourth-seeded Tigers downed the Chilhowie Warriors 6-4 on a hot afternoon at Emory & Henry College.

“I think we're over the hump now,” Honaker coach Donovan Helton said. “We came into a tough district and almost tied for second place in the regular season.

“We opened the tournament with a win [over fifth-seeded Rural Retreat and then won] against the top seed in Patrick Henry and we got another quality win today. I like my team.”

In Friday’s 8-7 defeat of Patrick Henry, Honaker scored four runs in the seventh inning.

The key on Monday was a five-run rally in the sixth inning.

“We lost by two runs to Chilhowie in both games this season,” Helton said. “It’s tight between us, but this was the best we’ve hit against them.”
