LEBANON, Va. – Sweet Musick led to sweet victory.
Peyton Musick, who didn’t play when Honaker lost to George Wythe earlier this season by 28 points, matched that 28 points and led a solid defensive effort to guide the Tigers to a 64-62 VHSL Class 1 state quarterfinal victory over the Maroons on Tuesday night at a loud and energetic Lebanon High School gymnasium.
“It was a big game for us. We have been ready for one of these teams, Auburn or Wythe, since the beginning of the season,” said Musick, whose Tigers lost to Auburn in the state quarterfinals last season. “That is what we have been striving for because we lost to Auburn last year. We really came out with a lot of energy and practiced really hard.”
One down, one to go. Region 1D champion Honaker (22-7) will host Region 1C champion Auburn in a Class 1 state quarterfinal game on Friday, also at Lebanon High School. The winner plays for the Class 1 state title next week in Richmond.
