SALTVILLE, Va. – The Chilhowie Warriors felt they had a shot at springing the upset on Friday night.
Honaker put an end to those plans by making it hard for Chilhowie to make shots.
The Tigers stifled, subdued and shut down the Warriors in rolling to a 49-30 victory in the finals of the Hogoheegee District boys basketball tournament at Northwood High School.
Chilhowie (15-9) went 12:50 without sinking a shot from the field during a stretch that spanned the second and third quarters. The Warriors finished 9-for-40 from the field, 5-for-27 from 3-point range and committed 15 turnovers.
Will Goodwin, who scored 26 points in Chilhowie’s semifinal win over Rural Retreat, was held scoreless.
“Credit their defense,” said Chilhowie coach Matt Snodgrass. “Their defense set the tone all night. They got deflections, pushed us around a little bit. … We missed some shots we normally make, but that’s their defense. They are the standard around here right now defensively.”
