HONAKER, Va. – On Honaker High School’s first offensive play of the 2023 football season, Peyton Musick connected with Parker Bandy on a 55-yard touchdown pass.

It was definitely a sign of things to come.

The Tigers have been humming along ever since with their Air Raid offense producing big numbers as the highest-scoring unit in far Southwest Virginia.

They have scored at least 26 points in each game, have gone over 50 on four occasions and hung 74 on Pioneer District champion Narrows back in October.

Musick has thrown for more than 3,000 yards.

Bandy has collected upwards of 1,200 receiving yards.

Aidan Lowe has surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark.

The team is 13-0 and averaging 44.5 points per game entering Saturday afternoon’s state semifinal clash with the Galax Maroon Tide.

It all starts with the snap from 6-foot, 230-pound sophomore center Maddox Sykes.

“As soon as that first snap,” said fellow lineman Tyler Cole. “We know it’s time for business.”

Sykes has excelled in his first season starting at center and has enjoyed every minute of it.

“I love playing the position,” Sykes said. “It really is an all-around fun position. Being a part of an offense this high scoring is amazing. I really love the energy we all get from it. It’s really just electric.”
