Hogoheegee District
It was also a day to remember for Chilhowie senior Tess Somervell.
After winning three events and guiding the Warriors to their first regional track and field title last spring, Somervell earned her first cross country district title Wednesday in a time of 21.57.6.
“That was probably my best time on this course, so I’m really happy,” Somervell said.
The path to the big trophy for Somervell included a mix of courage and desperation.
“I went down every hill as fast as I could even if it hurt,” Somervell said. “Just getting that speed serves as a counterbalance.”
Somervell maintained a sizeable advantage over eventual runner-up Kirsten Woodard (23:18) from Patrick Henry, and then finished with a flourish.
“I was scared coming off the dam because I thought the other runners were right behind me,” said Somervell, who is considering running at Emory & Henry next year.
Patrick Henry (19 points) took the team title, with Rural Retreat (37) following.
In the boys race, Chilhowie senior Mason Lee earned his first district crown in a time of 18:36.
“This year been a little tough because I haven’t been able to match the time (17:54) that I ran in the state meet last year,” Lee said.
Lee controlled Wednesday’s meet with a consistent pace.
“Based off past times, I knew coming in that I was supposed to be at the front,” Lee said. “A couple kids from Honaker went out pretty fast, but I held back because I didn’t want to wear myself out. I was able to get the lead after the first 400 and then pull away.”
Chilhowie junior Lucas Hubble was a distant second in a time of 19:04.
“Running by yourself is pretty hard, but I was happy to get the win and run my second-fastest time of the season,” Lee said.
Chilhowie earned the team title with a score of 28. Honaker was second at 39 points.
The Region 1D meet will be held at Grundy next Wednesday.
