Michael Thompson

Michael Thompson of Bandy realized a need to develop basic computer skills in order to try to find a new job. Michael conveyed that his past experience using a computer had been very limited and that there were always Internet service issues where he lived. His vocational advocate referred him to Southwest Regional Adult Education for the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum and assessments.

The Northstar Digital Literacy program is aimed at helping adults acquire the skills they need in today’s workplace. An individual may work through self-guided learning modules and then take corresponding assessments to earn one or more certificates. To do this, adult learners must take the tests in a supervised setting provided by Southwest Regional Adult Education. Testing sites are conveniently located throughout the region.

In January 2021, Michael enrolled in the adult education class at Tazewell County Career & Technical Center taught by Willie Hunt and Beverly Proffitt. He found that he enjoyed the class, and he has been very successful in completing his certifications in the program. On a scale of 1-10, Michael says he would rate his computer skills at level 1 when he first started the program. Now, after working through a number of the Northstar Digital Literacy modules, he rates himself at level 7. Michael says that he has learned a lot as he has worked through the curriculum. He commented that his instructors have been “perfect” and that they have provided “A++” support to him as he studies. Instructor Beverly Proffitt commented, “Mr. Thompson has been one of the most dedicated students we have had. I believe he drives across two mountains just to get to class. Even in the winter, Mr. Thompson would still faithfully attend class. Each night Mr. Thompson would work very hard on different components. When Mr. Thompson would come across a difficult section, Mr. Willie Hunt would sit beside of him and work through each component together.” Ms. Proffitt continued, “The grading scale for the Northstar Digital Literacy Program is extremely high. An easily passing grade in school would not come close to the passing grade on this program. Mr. Thompson would score high, but still not pass the component. He never gave up. He kept at it and kept at it. He currently has earned a total of seven certificates. Mr. Hunt printed off these certificates for Mr. Thompson and made a portfolio for him. Mr. Thompson should be very proud of himself. He has worked very hard, and he has accomplished so much in a very small amount of time. Mr. Hunt did an excellent job in helping Mr. Thompson obtain all of these certificates.”

Southwest Regional Adult Education congratulates Michael Thompson on his success with the Northstar Digital Literacy curriculum and assessments!
